Did You Know? - Frozen Fruit Smoothie Is As Healthy As It Is Delicious On A Hot Summer Day
I’m a big fan of yummy cold treats during the summer and since it’s bikini season, it should also be low in calories. Making a frozen fruit smoothie with some strawberries, a few banana slices and some low-fat yogurt and milk sounds like the perfect solution. Not only does it taste delicious, it’s actually quite healthy. Let’s take a look at what makes this beverage so healthy.
Let’s start with the frozen fruit. You know how healthy eating plenty of fruit is. It is full of fiber and of course vitamins. It’s also beneficial to use frozen instead of fresh fruit. The produce is harvested when it has the most vitamins and nutrients. Frozen fruits and vegetables are often better for you than their fresh counterparts since they are often several days old before you take them home. It has to be picked off the vine or tree, washed and then taken to the grocery store by truck or train. And it looses important nutrients, including vitamins, during that period. That’s why it’s even better to use frozen fruit in your smoothies.
Yogurt And Milk - Now let’s look at the next two ingredients that often make it in my frozen fruit smoothie. They are low-fat yogurt and skim milk. They are full of calcium that helps keep your bones strong. As women we particularly benefit from this important mineral. As we get older our bones are depleted of calcium and we have to replenish it or risk osteoporosis as we get older. For the same reason, smoothies are also healthy for kids. They benefit from the calcium boost just as much since their growing bodies require plenty of it.
Yogurt as well as milk contain quite a bit of protein which helps your body maintain muscle mass. It is very important to get plenty of protein when you are on a weight loss plan or most of your weight loss will be in muscle instead of body fat.
Don’t Forget About The Hydration Factor - Since smoothies have quite a bit of liquid in them from the milk and all the juice in the fruits, they are a great way to hydrate. Without plenty of water our bodies can not function and during a hot summer day we tend to lose even more than usual of the precious liquid. Smoothies are my favorite way to help us stay hydrated - of course you should still make sure you drink plenty of plain water as well.
The fact that they are frozen also helps our bodies cool down. It’s just one of the many benefits of drinking a frozen fruit smoothie. Another is that they are healthy, relatively low in calories and taste very very yummy. And that’s why this type of smoothie is such a wonderful treat.
